Canada Might Not Be Giving Up the F-35 Stealth Fighter Afterall

Canada is spending roughly C$800 million ($564 million) to equip its planned F-35A fleet with the Joint Strike Missile, the long-range weapon built by Norway's Kongsberg. Announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney at the 2026 NATO summit in Ankara, the deal makes Canada the sixth F-35 operator to select the missile, after Norway, Japan, Australia, the United States, and Germany. Designed to fit inside the F-35's internal weapons bays, the JSM lets the fighter carry a 350-kilometer strike weapon while keeping its stealth profile intact, and it can hit both warships and land targets. The purchase expands the Royal Canadian Air Force's F-35 beyond air defense as Ottawa continues to weigh its long-term fighter plans.
