The first Iranian Tomcat kill came on September 7, 1980, two weeks before Iraq formally invaded - an Mi-25 helicopter shot down with the F-14's 20mm cannon. A week later another Tomcat killed an Iraqi MiG-21 with an AIM-54 Phoenix, the first wartime Phoenix victory anyone had scored. Iran went on to base Tomcats around Tehran and the oil terminal at Kharg Island, using the AWG-9 radar to find Iraqi aircraft long before Iraqi pilots could see anything at all.
